Ozone Layer Depletion-If we Do Not Act now and Appropriately…

Ozone Layer Depletion-If we Do Not Act now and Appropriately…

I live in the city of Lagos Nigeria. I have always wondered the number of trees bush and undergrowth Lagos might have had between 100 to 150 years back! I have also wondered the number of trees and bush my city would have 100 to 150 years from now! By my estimate Lagos  might have been deprived of over 90% of its trees and undergrowth in the last 100 years to establish this city and at the rate we are  going 150 years from now perhaps less than .5% of Lagos trees might be what is left!  This is same in most African cities and even European  American and Asian cities perhaps with little difference because of conscious effort in those cities to plant trees and maintain them. Even at those places because of high degree of industrialization the little they gained by conscious tree planting has been erased by the in ordinate push of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere! So at the end of the we all may be equally culpable.

Experiencing First-Hand the Result of our rascality and some analysis

Just about February ending this year my children came home and I noticed that the color of the water which use to spackle now had a dull ash-color that irritated me; as I wondered how the bore hole owner could allow his water to get that dirty and had the effrontery to collect money for it and instantly I ordered about 40 liters of water already fetched to be deposed into the gutter and water collected elsewhere. You may wonder how someone living in Lagos  be fetching water from  commercial bore whole operator. Well less than 10% of the 19 million population managers of the city claim have standard pipe born water! You can imagine Lagos in this state what the rest of the country could offer. Back to the ash colored water, There after the water got a bit better, few weeks after, the water was back to ash color! I guess that the bore whole operator also was at a loss what was wrong; to cut the story up one morning virtually all the surrounding bore holes were dried up it was as if a famine descended on the immediate neighborhood! You can’t imagine the panic the government has no water so the only option would be far ponds  that had shrank to all time low; well was out of  it since bore holes which were much deeper dried up it meant that surface water had long dried out.! For those who do not know Lagos, it is a coastal city close to Atlantic to the extent that everywhere you dig you get water for these waters to dry up means something terrible had indeed happed or happening. Of course you don’t need a lawyer to prove what is happening even from 7:30 am the sun shines with a bite that is amazing and if you are so stupid to be on road from 11am to say 5:30 pm you understand what roasting of human being means or try to remove your shoes to walk on bare cement floor your foot would be roasted! Right now water is being peddled in Lagos at almost four times what it used to be! What is more I have no doubt that this is just the very beginning! In a day sometimes I berth over five times now!  A friend of my who lives in a decked house  told us what ordeal that awaits him day and night since the deck conducts the heat strait to all in his house including bed mattresses upholstery each of them as hot as roasted yam! The summary of this is that the trouble we brought upon all of us is here and we just can’t run away from it, never! We have cut so much trees and have pumped in so much carbon dioxide into the ozone layer that it is incapable of shielding the sun rays and radiation on our behalf!

Possible troubles on the way

Ø As the temperature keeps rising medium altitude  and high altitude areas of earth would lose water supply, either they have to dig much deeper or abandoned whichever the case water would get out of reach of most of world population especially in developing world and under developed world which would lead to people drinking water from whichever source the world should be ready to deal with more water born disease as well as possibility of new water born disease!
Ø If for any reasons the rain also fails to fall properly  then the world should get ready  for hunger art a scale never envisaged as a result of failed cropping and draught!
Ø If our punishment is to reach its climax of total disaster for all the sun might come up with solar flare of above normal average or the super flare then at last our nuclear bombs would not be necessary to burn down the little green planet!

Possible Way of resolving the challenge

Planting of trees

While this is a step in the right direction  but it is late! For instance how many trees can Lagos city managers plant by the road sides to compensate for millions of trees cut down to form this city!? While tree planting should continue it is vested with so many problem and even if all buildings in Lagos or even half of the city is destroyed to plant trees it would take several decades to have something reasonable enough to care for the earth. But we didn’t have decades to enable us plant trees and even if we have, decades it is impossible to destroy 50% of the houses in Lagos since even with the current housing we are not getting enough shelter for the people in the city!

Stop pumping carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere

How are you going to stop pumping carbon di-oxide into the atmosphere without most of our industries shutting down as well as most automobiles and even gen sets deactivated!?

Pumping Ozone into Ozone layer

I and a friend were considering the challenge today and I got thinking I am aware that O3 can be produced in large quantity in laboratories across the globe if the world is ready to burn notes instead of the Earth to be burnt! So I suggested to my friend that Ozone O3 be produced in large quantity and if possible use space shuttle to take it to the ozone layer to start the quick action of repairing the ozone layer. My friend said that I was not the first to think this that President Obama had even asked the US congress to give him money to do the program but was denied the fund! I shouted why!? But I know why!  Now once more I am calling on President Obama, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon of UN, British Prime minister, Russian President, Chinese Primer, Japanese Prime minister and indeed all world leaders to an urgent summit to discuss how to fund the Ozone layer repair program. I suggest each country pay according to GDP or any other parameter that experts could come up with. It is either we burn the Dollars or the earth is burnt!
